People Watching vs. Judging People

I’d argue that people watching is the worlds most popular pastime…

We all people watch! Humans are fascinating creatures, why not! We people watch EVERYWHERE, EVERYDAY! In public, these are the easily accessible humans which I find the most entertaining. Tv, movies, sports, social media…. We have nothing else to do in this world but work and spend time with other people in groups of more people.

I try to explain this all the time. I’m not judging people when I watch. I truly enjoy watching what makes people tick, how they interact and react. I like to really focus in on every detail. Because let’s be honest the details make the stories we tell for years to come. If you start a story with, “a person was walking by.” Boring!!!! No, you’d break down every detail, this isn’t judging. These are the facts or as a friend and I were chatting the other night, descriptors, that set the mood. Sooo, try again, Man passing by:
(Music blasting from pocket, super stylish hat, carrying a plastic bag, diamond filled smiling grill) he says under breath, “hey yo, got i those gummies.”“ya heard me?”
Sure, as he was walking up I thought, check this guy out, must be a story there.. and sure enough he was a character. No judgements, just intrigued and glad he delivered.

How many of you scroll your many social media platforms daily, to essentially, people watch. This is where the watching vs. judging can get hairy. Majority of us post the good, fun, pretty, desirable stuff. Sometimes I’m not always the goofy, happy weirdo people have come to watch to love/hate. But, this isn’t real people watching. Social media is an outlet for some to share what makes them feel good. The real gritty stuff is what people do when they don’t think people are watching, when they are not behind the screen of a person they are creating for you to see.

Watch people. Listen to people. Eavesdrop on people. Talk to strangers. Be open. Say yes to adventure! When you do these things, find the love, humor, truths, sadness, hurt, anger, humility, and happiness and don’t be quick to judge! We all have our story and are trying to make it through to whatever is next!
