I had no plans of being naked at a goofy golf course, when I planned a photo shoot! It was in the middle of the day right next to a busy road where people could see. Sometimes magical things happen when you loosen the reins on what you have planned and let things happen.
Any vacation I “plan” I pick a destination and make sure I have a place to sleep. I have a general idea. The no planning on the hotel part has gone sideways a few times so I do a little research on location and venue now. If I book a trip months, weeks or days out. I think about all the things I want to do there while booking. Then, once it’s booked I don’t have another thought until the trip happens. Why should I sit there and go over details when it’s months away. The plans I’ve worked up in my head could be ruined by weather, road work, construction, Covid, an election, natural disaster, etc… If what I wanted to do is open and available, bonus! If not I’m in a new place and I’m sure I’ll find something to entertain myself. All you have to do is be ready and open to adventure!
The same goes for my art and murals. Which, I love my clients and have deep appreciation for their complete trust. I have some that have their clear vision and I’ll execute it for them. Then I have majority of people just say, we like your work, do whatever?!?! At first this was scary. I would stall on the job because I had no plan to give them. They have no plans, they are paying me money to paint a massive wall and with little or no direction. I’ve become accustomed to sketching a general idea of how I MIGHT use the space. Some jobs I literally have a general idea with the idea but nothing on colors or placement until I get in there. When I get there, I look around the area, stare at the space and ask a the client a few specific questions. I throw out some ideas and the usually say, we trust you!
I feel like when we over plan we set ourselves up to be disappointed if things don’t go how we replayed them in our head over and over. I tend get overly excited about everything with zero expectations and I have a good time no matter how the plans go. If you expect me to make plans, expect a surprise, a good time and company!
